What Are Macronutrients?
Protein, carbohydrates, and fat are the three macronutrients — the nutrients your body requires in relatively large amounts to function. Unlike vitamins and minerals (called micronutrients), macronutrients supply energy measured in calories and form the structural foundation of nearly every tissue and process in your body.

Protein: Builder and Repairman
Protein is made up of amino acids, often described as the body's building blocks. Your body uses them to build and repair muscle tissue, produce enzymes and hormones, support immune function, and transport oxygen through the blood.
When carbohydrate and fat intake is sufficient, protein is largely spared for these structural roles rather than burned for energy. When calorie intake drops significantly, however, the body may break down muscle protein for fuel — one reason very low-calorie diets can undermine muscle mass over time.
Protein also has a relatively high thermic effect, meaning the body uses more energy digesting it compared to carbs or fat. It tends to promote satiety, which can support appetite management as part of a balanced eating pattern.
Good dietary sources include poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, tofu, and tempeh. Animal sources generally supply all essential amino acids; plant sources can too when a variety of foods is eaten across the day.
Macronutrient
Nutrients required by the body in large quantities that supply energy and structural materials. The three macronutrients are protein, carbohydrates, and fat.
Amino acids
The molecular building blocks that make up proteins. Of the 20 amino acids, nine are 'essential,' meaning the body cannot produce them and they must be obtained through food.
Glycogen
The stored form of glucose kept in the liver and muscles. The body draws on glycogen for rapid energy, particularly during exercise or between meals.
Dietary fiber
A type of carbohydrate the body cannot fully digest. Fiber supports digestive health, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and is associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk.
Thermic effect of food
The energy the body expends to digest, absorb, and metabolize nutrients. Protein has a higher thermic effect than carbohydrates or fat.
Essential fatty acids
Fats the body cannot synthesize on its own and must obtain from food. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are both considered essential.
Carbohydrates: Your Body's Preferred Fuel
Carbohydrates break down into glucose, the primary fuel for the brain, red blood cells, and working muscles. The body stores a limited supply as glycogen in the liver and muscles, ready to be drawn on between meals and during physical activity.
Not all carbohydrates behave the same way. Refined carbohydrates — such as white bread or sugar-sweetened beverages — digest quickly and can cause rapid blood sugar shifts. Whole-food sources rich in dietary fiber, including vegetables, legumes, fruits, and whole grains, digest more slowly and support steadier energy levels, digestive health, and cardiovascular function.
Carbohydrates have been at the center of many popular diet debates, but established dietary guidelines consistently support them as an important part of a health-promoting eating pattern — the key being the quality and food sources chosen. Fat: Essential, Not Optional
Dietary fat has a higher calorie density than protein or carbohydrates — providing 9 calories per gram compared to 4 — but this does not make it a nutrient to avoid. Fat performs functions the body cannot do without.
Fat is required for absorbing fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), insulating organs, maintaining healthy cell membranes, and producing hormones including those involved in reproductive health. Certain fatty acids — particularly omega-3s and omega-6s — are termed essential because the body cannot synthesize them and they must come from food.
The type of fat matters. Unsaturated fats found in olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados, and fatty fish are associated with cardiovascular health in research. Saturated fats, found in red meat and full-fat dairy, are generally recommended in moderation by major dietary guidelines. Industrially produced trans fats are widely considered harmful and have been largely removed from the US food supply, though small amounts may still appear on labels.
